From farmhouse to hotel you'll love
On historical photographs, the carved part of the farmhouse gable is decorated with the monogram J. H., referring to the name of the last owner of the farmhouse - Josef Homuta. The Homuta family bought the originally indebted farm in the second half of the 19th century and gradually improved it for three generations until the beginning of World War II. That is why this cultural monument, whose core probably dates from the mid-18th century, is called nothing else in the area than the Homuta farm.
There are few pictures available from the time when the farm was thriving. In 1916 a farmhouse with machinery, an open wheel barn and a small thatched roof barn was captured. A photograph taken sixteen years later shows the barn in the background as it still stands on the farm today. The Homut family lost the farm twice. It was taken from them by the Germans soon after the occupation began. After the end of the war, the family did get the farm back, but after a few years it was forfeited to an agricultural cooperative during communist collectivization. The Homuts had to move to the house next door, the farm was left almost unmaintained and completely abandoned. The Homut family saw how the usefulness of the following forty years of "sensitive" communist rule had affected the shape of the farm when the farm was returned to them as part of restitution.
Thanks to Mr. Petr Pěnkau, who bought the farm from the Homut family in 1992, the whole building escaped certain total destruction. The beginning of reconstruction and registration in the register of cultural monuments saved it. With a vision to build an accommodation facility on the Homut farm, Mr Pěnkava bravely set about the reconstruction and, although he failed to see his intention through, we admire his enthusiasm and commitment. In 2014 we bought the farm from Mr. Pěnkava.
With respect for the historical building and traditions, we started to build a small hotel from Homut's farm. We spent a year designing and in September 2015 we started the actual renovation. With humility, we approached the modest and spare layout and sensitively incorporated contemporary design and architectural solutions. Finding the balance between what is time-tested over two hundred years and what we believe the experience of staying in the heart of the Kokořín region should be has been a challenging but beautiful journey. We welcomed our first guests on 17 July 2017. Together we began to write the next chapter in the history of this enchanting place.
